Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in synagogues,
preaching the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness
among the people.
While he was in one
of the cities, a man full of leprosy came to him, begging him and kneeling
down, saying, “If you want to, you can make me clean.”
Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out his hand and
touched him, saying, “I do want to. Be made clean.” When he had said this, the
leprosy departed, and he was made clean. Jesus strictly warned him, “Say
nothing to anyone, but go show yourself to the priest, and offer for your
cleansing the things which Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”
But the man went out, and began to proclaim it everywhere,
so that Jesus could no more openly enter a city, but stayed in desert places;
and still they came to him from everywhere.
Reflection
By touching a leper, Jesus did
something shocking, but rather than being contaminated by the contact, his own wholeness
was contagious, flowing to the leper, curing and cleansing him. Who are the
untouchables in our world today? Is it possible for them to be made whole by
the touch of those who care?
Prayer:
Grant that the wholeness in me, Lord, will be stronger than the brokenness in
those who feel untouchable.
