When Jesus had finished directing his
twelve disciples, he departed from there to teach and preach. When John heard
in prison what Jesus was doing, he called two of his disciples and sent them to
him. When the men had come to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptizer has sent us
to you, saying, ‘Are you the one who comes, or should we look for another?’”
That day Jesus cured many of diseases
and plagues and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. He said to
the messengers, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind
receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are
cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to
them. Blessed is he who finds no occasion for stumbling in me.”
The answer to John’s question seems obvious to us, but things
are always clearer in hindsight. Jesus wasn’t exactly what John had expected,
and that raised questions for him. What preconceived ideas about Jesus do you
bring to this study? Are you willing to let the actual story of Jesus change your
thoughts about who he is and your relationship with him?
Prayer: Break through my preconceived ideas, Lord, and let me
see you as you are even when it is different than what I’ve always thought.
