Jesus told the disciples to get
into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side. After he had sent the
crowds away, he went up into the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came,
he was there alone; the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by
the waves because the wind was fierce. Late in the night, Jesus came to them,
walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him, they cried out in fear, “It’s a
ghost!” Jesus spoke to them, “Cheer up! It is I! Don’t be afraid.”
Peter answered him, “Lord, if it
is you, let me to come to you on the waters.”
He said, “Come!”
Peter stepped down from the
boat, and walked on the waters toward Jesus. But when he saw that the wind was
strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Jesus stretched out his hand,
took hold of him, and said, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” When they
got up into the boat, the wind ceased. Those who were in the boat came and
worshiped him, saying, “You truly are the Son of God!”
Reflection
In this story, Jesus is once
again a non-anxious presence, unconcerned about wind and waves, walking on
water toward the boat. Peter is able to walk on the water as well until his
focus shifts from Jesus to the wind and waves. When the storms of life are
raging, do you find it difficult to keep your focus and walk by faith? Can you
think of an example in your own life when Jesus reached out and grabbed you
when you were starting to sink?
Prayer: When the storms come,
Lord, help me keep my focus and walk by faith.
