Leaving the borders of Tyre and
Sidon, Jesus came to the Sea of Galilee, through the middle of the region of
Decapolis. People brought to him one who was deaf and had a speech impediment,
and begged Jesus to lay his hand on him. Jesus took him aside from the
multitude, privately, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat, and
touched his tongue. Looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said to him,
“Ephphatha!” that is, “Be opened!” Immediately his ears were opened, and his
tongue was released, and he spoke clearly. He commanded them to tell no one,
but the more he commanded them, the more widely they proclaimed it. They were
astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He makes even
the deaf hear, and the mute speak!”
Reflection
This man was given a new life
and clear evidence life’s afflictions aren’t a punishment from God. How have
you thought about the suffering in your life? What imperfections in your body
would you most like to see changed?
Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for
the wonders of the human body and the promise of a new body in the
resurrection.
