Many of the crowd, when they
heard these words, said, “This is truly the prophet.” Others said, “This is the
Christ.” But some said, “What? Does the Christ come out of Galilee? Hasn’t
Scripture said the Christ comes from David, and from Bethlehem, David’s village?”
So there arose a division in the crowd because of him. Some wanted to arrest
him, but no one did. The officers came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and
said to them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?”
The officers answered, “No man
ever spoke like this man!”
The Pharisees answered them,
“You aren’t also led astray, are you? Have any of the rulers believed in him,
or any of the Pharisees? This crowd is ignorant of the law and is accursed.”
Nicodemus (the one who came to Jesus
by night) said to them, “Does our law judge a man, unless it first hears from
him personally and knows what he does?”
They answered him, “Are you also
from Galilee? Search, and see that no prophet has arisen out of Galilee.”
Reflection
Some were convinced Jesus was
the Messiah, while others thought he was an imposter because he didn’t fit in
with what they had always been told the Messiah would be. What has shaped your
view of Jesus? Have you simply accepted everything you’ve been taught? How do you
know if what you’ve been taught is true?
Prayer: Open my mind, Lord,
to accept new ideas and to see you as you are and not simply as others have
imagined you to be.
