“Let your clothes be fastened
and your lamps burning. Be like those watching for their master, when he
returns from the marriage feast; when he comes and knocks, they immediately
open to him. Blessed are those servants, whom the lord will find watching
when he comes. He will see to his own needs while telling them to rest; then he
will come and serve them. They will be blessed if he comes in the middle
of the night, and finds them waiting.
But know this, if the master of the
house had known when the thief was coming, he would have watched, and not
allowed his house to be broken into. Be ready, because the Son of Man is coming
in an hour you don’t expect.”
Peter said to him, “Lord, are
you telling this parable to us, or to everybody?”
Jesus said, “Who then is
the faithful and wise steward, given responsibility to see that everyone in the
household has enough to eat? Blessed is the servant found carrying out his
duties when his master returns. That servant will be given even greater
responsibility. But if the servant says in his heart, ‘My lord delays his
coming,’ and begins to beat the servants, and to eat and drink, and become
drunk, then the lord of that servant will come in a day and hour when he
isn’t expected, and will cut him to pieces and put him with the
unfaithful. That servant who knew what the master wanted and didn’t even
start to do it, will be beaten severely, but the servant who didn’t know,
and did evil things, will be beaten lightly. To whom much is given, much will be
required; to whom much is entrusted, more will be asked.
Reflections
Being a follower of Jesus is
more a matter of responsibility than of privilege. These parables emphasize the
importance of being ready when called any time of day or night. Have you ever
had a job for which you were on call? Does following Jesus feel like that?
Should it?
Prayer: Help me not become so
comfortable, Lord, that I become presumptuous of what you would have me do.
