52. Stilling the Storm

That evening, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s go over to the other side.” Leaving the multitude, they took him with them in the boat. Other small boats were also with them. A strong storm arose, waves were coming into the boat, and the boat began filling up. Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion, when they woke him, saying, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are dying?”

He awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? How is it that you have no faith?”

They were greatly afraid, and said to one another, “Who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

The disciples were afraid here of two things: the power of a storm which could kill them, and the power of Jesus which could calm the storm and save them. What threats to life do you fear most? Do people today still fear God? Should they?
Prayer: Save me from the extremes, Lord, of presuming on your love or fearing your anger.
