80. Thinking Like Pharisees

Jesus entered into the boat with his disciples, and came into the region of Dalmanutha. They had forgotten to bring more bread, and had only one loaf in the boat with them. Jesus warned them: “Beware the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.”

They said to one another, “It’s because we have no bread.”

Jesus, seeing their confusion, said, “Why do you think it’s because you have no bread? Do you still not understand? Is your heart still hardened? Having eyes, don’t you see? Having ears, don’t you hear? Don’t you remember? When I broke the five loaves among the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?”

They told him, “Twelve.”

“When the seven loaves fed the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?”

They told him, “Seven.”

He asked them, “Don’t you understand yet?”

Reflection

Even after seeing a multitude fed, the disciples were anxious about their food supply. They had failed to grasp one of Jesus’ main points: God will provide. Can you think of examples in your own life when God provided for your needs in an amazing way? Even with what God has done for you, do you still find it difficult to trust when times are hard?

Prayer: Help me always remember, Lord, the way you have provided for me time and time again.
