102. The Importance of Faithfulness

He who is faithful in a very little will be faithful also in much. He who is dishonest in a very little will also be dishonest in much. If you haven’t been faithful with worldly wealth, who will entrust you with true riches? If you have not been faithful in what is another’s, who will give you what is your own? No one can serve two masters, for either you will hate the one, and love the other; or else hold to one, and despise the other. You aren’t able to serve God and wealth.”

The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard these things and scoffed at him. He said to them, “You justify yourselves in the sight of people, but God knows your hearts. What is exalted in the world is detestable to God. The law and the prophets were primary until John. From that time on, the good news of God’s kingdom has been preached, and people are trying to force their way in.

Reflection

Here’s what Jesus says: money and possessions are unimportant; people are important. How does your life measure up by these values? Have you resisted the lure of consumerism and materialism?

Prayer: Show me, Lord, what is truly important that I might not waste my life in trivial pursuits.
