37. Salt and Light

“You are the salt of the earth. If the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and walked on. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill can’t be hidden. Neither do you light a lamp, and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Even so, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father in heaven.

Reflection

Salt is good for many things unless it becomes tainted with impurities; then it is good for nothing. In the same way, light is only useful if it is in the open rather than hidden. There was a time not long ago when Christians were respected in the world, but today believers are more likely to be thought of as narrow-minded, bigoted, unloving and resistant to change. What would it look like to be salt and light in today’s world?
Prayer: Convict me, Lord, when my life communicates all the wrong messages.
