42. Humble Charity

“Be careful you don’t do your giving before others, to be seen by them, or you’ll have no reward from your Father in heaven. When you show compassion, don’t sound a trumpet, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may get glory from others. You can be sure they have received their reward. But when you do merciful deeds, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand does, so that your merciful deeds may be in secret; your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”

Reflection

Few people find it easy to be humble. Do you become upset when those you help fail to be sufficiently grateful? How important to you is it to be recognized for the good you do?
Prayer: Help me, Lord, do good for goodness sake and not for enhancing my status in the eyes of others.
