38. Fulfilling the Law

“Don’t think I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I didn’t come to destroy, but to fulfill. Until heaven and earth pass away, not even the smallest letter of the law shall pass away, until everything is accomplished. Whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do so, shall be called least in the Kingdom of God; but whoever obeys and teaches them shall be called great. Unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of God.

Reflections

Jesus managed to fulfill the law without becoming legalistic. We can do the same by recognizing the essence of the law is love, not rules. Are you a rule follower? Do you become resentful when you follow the rules and receive no reward while others break the rules and receive no punishment?
Prayer: Help me understand, Lord, that following your law is its own reward.
